mesg

If you are working and want to refuse messages, type:

$ mesg n

This tells anyone who attempts to use these programs that you are refusing messages. To turn it back on again (i.e. make yourself available for messages) type:

$ mesg y

You can just type:

$ mesg

... at any time to check your status.
