What your username is used for
What your username is used for

Your Compsoc username is important. It has the following functions:

  • It allows you to log into our server and website
  • It is your email address:
    [username]@compsoc.nuigalway.ie
  • It is also the location of your webspace on the system:
    http://www.compsoc.nuigalway.ie/~[username]

Your username uniquely identifies you on our server. It allows you identify yourself to log in and to control access to your files. Any commands you run while logged in are run with your permissions. No two usernames are the same on any one server.

Your username can consist of lower case letters, numbers and hyphens. Usernames are allocated on a first come first served basis. Many usernames will already have been allocated to other members or are reserved for system usage. The Compsoc Committee and Admin Team reserve the right to deny a username request.

If you have thought of a suitable username then you can check to see if it is available.

Next lets see what your email address is used for.
